Universe: The Fabrics of Perception

I am working with the Latin language and it is helping me to classify my thoughts more effectively by understanding historical correlations in meaning. For example matter was considered a fabric. The term for light, “lume”, comes from the term loom which alludes to textile manufacture. In fact all of the textile terms merge with geometry where they were practically applied.

WEAVE: a fabric

LINE: a line
ANG: a cut
HEIR: an area
VOL: layers
QUAL: a bundle

These terms have influenced our thinking for literally thousands of years. We still talk of the “fabric” of space, the fabric of time and “material” or whatever. We are unintentionally applying a metaphor. Yet it is a metaphor that has served us well.

At this point I present a scale that I have arrived at for human sensory perception.

I posted all of the above, because I believe that classification is underrated. If we spent more time thinking about the aesthetics of our classification language, which is presently total crap, we might make more discoveries.

How much do we conceal from ourselves because we deceive ourselves into thinkng a dogmatic classification system won’t bear fruit.

When Dmitri Mendeleev created this table to describe periodic behaviour of the elements, many of the elements had not been discovered. However, the table projected what the properties of those elements would be making the search much easier.  Dmitri also was very good at making Vodka.

As I have discussed there are Satrice, Fratrice, Patrice, Natrice, Matrice, Sortrice and Datrice networks.  Each of them classify in different ways.  Understanding these networks and their classification are the road to new discoveries.  Networks are classification systems.

I just saw this in the New York Times:

It is called a “Knowledge Map”.  It is a plot of the link clicking behaviour of a scientific community.  Not what they say is important, but where they are going that they think is important.  From this information it may be possible to reorganize knowledge to make it more accessible to everyone.

And that is what we are all here for getting and giving access.

They Failed, But They Were Not Afraid

When we think of physicists, the majority of us think of them as geniuses who understand the universe.  But the truth is, they do not.  Physicists, make models to explain and predict phenomena.  They are called “hypotheses”.  If a hypothesis stands up after many experiments it is called a “theory”, but it just a model.

Einstein was not a success.  He had some victories along the way, but he never achieved his goal.  Neither have the quantum physicists over the last eighty years.  They have corroborated many hypothesis that led to their ideas being called theories, but their theories are not proven.  That is because they do not predict all of the phenomena that are observed.  There are exceptions that cannot be explained.  From the first living thing that reacted to reality organisms have been trying to model their universe.  And every model is incomplete up to the physicists we have today.

Religion has become the word for the denial that a theory is incomplete.  Every religion on earth is guilty of it.  Scientists are guilty of it as well.  I am right every time I say that a model is wrong.  Goedel would agree with me.  The only constant appears to be that no theory is constant.  In fact, science requires us to speak in absolutes to leave room for falsifiability.  We have to leave no room for exceptions in order to discover the exception and change our worldview.

That is what a singularity is all about.  We refine our theory until it is cornered and then it realizes its transition into a new reality.  If we succeed in cornering out theory there is a climax.  If we fail in cornering our theory, there is an anti-climax.

Hiroshima was the singularity of the Second World War.  Nagasaki was the follow through to the exhaustion of Imperial Japan.

But Einstein’s life as a whole ended with an anti-climax as have the lives of every physicist who followed him.

Death is the ultimate anti-climax.  But do not be afraid.  No success nor failure is the complete measure of a person.  Accepting, changing strategy and trying again fearlessly is.

Blue Data, Red Data and Black Data

It has been a challenge to the traditional Data, Information, Knowledge and Wisdom hierarchy by introducing not one, but three forms of data.  I call them Blue Data, Red Data and Black Data.

Blue Data or Reflex Data is data that affects the system, but is not necessarily captured at all. It influences a transaction, but requires techniques external to regular data capture to record. Some of the most subtle aspects of design influence this level of a transaction.  This is when a customer leaves a website because the Flash presentation takes too long to load.

Red Data or Intuitive Data is registered by the system, but does not generate any exceptions or variances. Although the data affects the bottom line it does not register in the cognitive-physical or cognitive levels of the system.  This is “business as usual” data.

Black Data or Exception Data is registered by higher levels of the system.  This is data that calls for physical-cognitive response outside the domain of normal operation.  An example would be a customer having to make two orders of nine units and one order of seven units because the system cannot capture more than nine units in one transaction.

I believe that for the Data, Information, Knowledge and Wisdom model to be complete it has to recognize the significance of Blue Data, Red Data and Black Data. For business to truly be successful, it not only has to ascend the DIKW hierarchy, it has to descend the hierarchy below the traditional definition of data and recognize all of data’s facets.

And what is Information, Knowledge and Wisdom, but higher forms of data?
