It is not Aristotle’s fault. It is your fault.

So, you think Aristotle was stupid?  Sorry, no, you are stupid.

What modern science fails to recognize about Ancient Greek science is the limitations of observation without any extending technology put on Greek theory.

Modern scientists don’t acknowledge that every refutation of Aristotlean theory was due to the introduction of technology over 1000s of years that extended our powers of observation to macrosensory and microsensory ranges.

Aristotle’s theories were the best anyone could have come up with using the tools, unassisted human sensation, they had.

Aristotle in trying to describe the motion of thrown objects was a good description of the motion of rocket propelled objects.

The Greek elements of Earth, Water, Air and Fire are actually describing the states of Solid, Liquid, Gas and Plasma and rules they do obey.

Aristotle’s and Ptolemy’s model of the heavens was simply an attempt to make a mechanical clock to represent the observed movement of the heavens.  Their unassisted sensory experience made their conclusions and their model unavoidable until tools for macroscopic observation of the sun, planets and stars were possible.

Spontaneous generation recognizes that moisture and decay create a favorable environment for the growth of organisms.  What had not been observed was the existence of microscopic eggs, spermatazoa and sexual reproduction.

So Aristotle and Ptolemy used the best metaphors they had.  That has not changed.  The best model we have right now is a computer.  In about 1500 years they will say we were complete idiots.

Internet: It’s Complicated

There is a problem with the internet.  It has forgotten its roots.  It has forgotten HTML.  It has forgotten LaTeX. It has forgotten WordPerfect.  It has forgotten television.  It has forgotten radio.  It has forgotten film.  It has forgotten phonographs.  It has forgotten photographs.  It has forgotten the Gutenberg Press.  It has forgotten the Alphabet.  It has forgotten Arabic Numerals.  It has forgotten Hieroglyphics.  It has forgotten music.  It has forgotten speech.

The internet is fascinated with digital waveforms.  They don’t realize that digital waveforms are phenomenally primitive.  As a consequence the internet is phenomenally complicated.  We have a whole generation trying to use metaphors of analog media equipment represented on digital media equipment.  It is complete crap and it does not occur to anyone.  Word processors are crap.  Spreadsheets are crap.  Presentations are crap.  Vector Graphics are crap.  Audios are crap.  Videos are crap.  Their formats and editors are crap.  Complex useless crap that many people are making a good living making more complicated to guarantee their meal tickets and they don’t even know it.  They use words like “organic”, “innovative”, “2.0”, “web”, “village”, “technology”, “entertainment”, “design”, “thinking”, “visual”, “global”, “climate”, “change”, “open”, “source”, “search”, “apple”, “i”, “my”, “face”, “google”, “twit”, “social”, “network”, “pirate”.  They hire lots of “numerati”, “literati”, “vidirati”, “audirati”, “timerati”, “grapherati”.  The words are meaningless and the people don’t know their assholes from first base.  They measure their credibility by their credit rating.

You ask them a “Simple” question and you get the “Complex” answer.  They don’t hear the question and don’t speak the answer.

They are shotgun happy pretending to be rifle sad.

Simplicity eats when it is hungry, sleeps when it is tired, doesn’t work or play.  Simplicity never leaves and never arrives.  Simplicity neither asks nor tells the time.  Simplicity is the crooked path that is the shortest distance.  Simplicity is periodic and chaotic.  Simplicity folows but has no leaders; leads but has no followers.

Business Strategy: Creaming

In the past week I have been sending information to a Silicon Valley consulting firm seeking a dialogue and an estimate to incorporate into my business plan for my startup.  Today I received a reply that the consulting firm was ending discussion because they did not want to do work that did not guarantee paid business.

In Peter Drucker’s book, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, such a strategy is called “creaming”.  It is a business plan that seeks to maintain the status quo while also seeking the largest profit margins.  This strategy allowed Japanese mini-mills to undermine and destroy the American steel industry and Japanese auto makers to undermine and destroy the American auto industry.  It is no surprise that Peter Drucker was fired by General Motors.  Now, we are facing the same business plans in the American information technology industry.

Today, I appealed the decision of that consulting company’s Vice President and wrote directly to the Owner.  I have pointed out Drucker’s observations.  I have also decided that if my appeal fails, I will go to information technology companies outside the United States.  I do not want to be part of the recurring American addiction to a recipe for disaster.

Literacy and Numeracy: Stone Axes and Bone Knives

Ultimately, everything is metaphor, whether we relate a taste to a strawberry or a color to a sound.  I use the word synesthesis broadly to describe the mechanism in memory that makes this possible.  The more I read, the more I am discovering that the structure is relatively the same in most individuals, but the perceptual history of every individual shapes the content of this structure differently.

There is some research that shows identical twins when together take different paths, however separated identical twins take similar paths.  You can find this in the work of Steven Pinker.

What is known is multiple sensory cues are better than individual sensory cues.  A visual cue will have a synergistic effect in memory when accompanied by other sensory cues including what I call the “cognitive sense”.  This being the case, the classroom is a terrible environment for learning and it is generally better to be immersed and learning in an environment with as many real sensory cues as possible right from the start.  This is why immersion is regarded as the best way to learn language although there are some caveats.

Steven Pinker has found that restricting language does limit people in their thinking, however in a generation the children build complete grammars with the language they are given and even coin new words as their experience dictates.  Language is a living, evolving thing within and across generations and cannot be contained in a 1984 fashion.  Nor is it wise to attempt to freeze a language you are studying, because it is a moving target.  Spelling guides, pronunciation keys, dictionaries, thesauruses, quotations, encyclopedias, news was never meant to police your thinking, but to equip you to think more broadly than your current abilities.  You weren’t meant to follow these books, you were meant to read to lead.  The books were meant to follow you.

Memory is infinitely flexible.  We are continually living a life where our mental data is accumulating and where we encounter crisis, climax and resolution or some variation mentally and we make the mental leap or stand on the cliff edge unable to evolve and cornered by our past.

Physics, Chemistry, Chronology, Geology, Psychology, Biology, Mathematics are the foundation stones of our sensory perception and our symbol systems and every one of these symbol systems evolves as we accomplish a phase change in any one due to an accumulation of exceptions until the system on which the symbols are based breaks down.  We call these phase change points “zero” and “infinity”, but zero and infinity are only place holders on a continuum be it linear, geometric, exponential or hyperbolic that has yet to show a limit of any kind.  All they mark are phase changes.

As Goedel demonstrated mathematically no system is complete, therefore no symbol system is complete.  There will always be phenomena that have yet to be represented and cannot be represented by the present system.  This is true for any language as well.  Listen to the phenomenal aural vocabulary of our youth as they imitate the sounds of their environment such as instruments and devices that our previous generation never heard.  Can we capture those “sound effects” with our current alphabet or icons?  I listen to children and youths communicating without uttering a single word in any language.  They communicate in the sounds and visual action of their home entertainment systems!  Anime is creating a world of children who speak a language their parents cannot fathom unless they are watching what their children watch.

And don’t be surprised to find children are no less intelligent than we were.  They don’t need the literacy we had to function in their environment quite effectively.  Measures of literacy and numeracy are irrelevant justifications for perpetuating an obsolete educational system.  The problem isn’t your children, it’s your educators.  Your children will define what communication will be in the future and we have to learn their lingua, not teach them ours.  Educators refusing to make the leap are, as Elliot said, “hollow men”.  Our children’s communication tools and cognitive abilities are in many ways superior to the cognitive tricks we use to think literally and mathematically with alphabets and numbers.  And that is all they are, a bag of tricks hammered into us for over twelve years.  Our literacy and numeracy tools are like stone axes and bone knives compared to what our children are using now.  Children can compose in video, audio, events, graphics, text, gesture and digits faster than we ever could read, rite and rithmatic with our pencils.  What makes our technology so exceptional or even worth preserving?  Are you still using a stone axe?

Welcome to the world of Marshall McLuhan.  Make the leap and learn the new media.  Let your children get on with computing.

The next time your child gets poor results on a literacy or numeracy test, tell the teachers to get their shit together and teach new media or find another job.

Love your children not your herd teachers.

Web 3.0: A Herd of Leaders

many cats

Google signaled the end of Web 1.0 Infrastructure and the beginning of Web 2.0 Information.

Is WolframAlpha signaling the end of Web 2.0 Information and the beginning of Web 3.0 Knowledge?

I have been thinking about the recent comments of Seth Godin about Social Networks on  Personally, I believe Seth is behind the curve and that Social Networking is becoming a bubble as platforms are becoming commoditized and Social Network companies are springing up everywhere without properly thought out business models.  Eventually, venture capitalists will get wise, pull their money out and the bubble will burst.  Web 2.0 is dead.  Long live Web 3.o. is probably the Web 3.0 shot that is being heard around the world.  A new generation of search engine for a new generation of knowledge-based internet technologies.

Social Networks will continue to exist.  All of the small Social Networks will be gobbled up by the biggies.  However, the center is shifting from the profiling of Web 2.0 focusing on the needs of the business to gather customer information back to the needs of the customer to gather product knowledge.

Relational databases focused on the values, information.  Associational databases will focus on the connections, knowledge.

Look forward to a new economy and a new plethora of business models.

Web 3.0 is here.  Knowledge is Power.  Power is Leadership.  Knowledge is Leadership.

Web 3.0: Debunking the Open Source Myth

We have all been had.  There are thousands of companies out there  telling us our content has no monetary value and then using our sweat to make billions on advertising and claiming they are benevolently providing us a service.  THERE IS NO BENEVOLENCE ONLY BUSINESS.

Every post you put on the web has value.  Every keystroke, every mouse click has value.  Corporations are using it to advertise, analyze markets, sell to you.  YOU SHOULD HAVE A PIECE OF THE MONETARY PIE.

The problem is not technology.  Sending payment to everyone is damned easy.  The problem is middle men.  MIDDLE MEN MAKE THE PRICE OF EVERYTHING ARTIFICIALLY HIGH.

We can all profit.  Everything we do has worth.  We can charge for everything.  Everytime someone looks at our content we can profit.  DEAL DIRECT TO LOWER THE PRICE OF EVERYTHING, DON’T GIVE YOUR WORK AND CONTENT AWAY FOR FREE.  THE WEBSITES DON’T.  THE CARRIERS DON’T.

You have worth.  You have value.  YOU MUST BE PAID WHEN YOUR CONTENT IS DISPLAYED.

Stop being a Tube.  Stop being a Twit.  Stop being a Face.  Stop being a Space.  Stop Digging.  Stop Gurgling.  You are not children any more.  YOU ARE THE KEY.  ENJOY CAPITALISM.  DEMAND PAYMENT.

There is a Fair Global Price for everything and it is not Open Source.  THE COMMONS WILL ALWAYS BE A TRAGEDY.
