Business Design: A Misnomer

I just came from IDEO’s Tim Brown’s blog, Design Thinking, post on “A Curriculum for Business Design” and I can see his want to emphasize the need for design, but he misses the point.

I think the word “design” is becoming too much of a “to a hammer, every problem is a nail” conundrum. Every problem is not a design problem.  Business is very diverse.  What I would like to see is the following curriculum:

Business Science Inductive (Problems and Visions)
Business Science Deductive (Entrepreneurship and Leadership)
Business Design (Climates and Trends)
Business Engineering (Location and Movement)
Business Skill (Innovation and Professionalism)
Business Training (Imitation and Apprenticeship)
Business Education (Memorization and Theory)
Business Networking (Fraternity and Sorority)
Business Products (Culturing and Manufacturing)
Business Services (Sharing and Caring)
Business Marketing (Branding and Pricing)
Business Transactions (Closing and Accounting)

Design plays a part in solving every problem, but not every part of a problem is a design problem.

Let’s instill the diversity of business with design as part of the solution, not the only solution.

Oh, and if you call a problem an “issue”, that is another misnomer.  Problems are scientific and can be solved.  Issues are political and can never be solved.

Mental Order: A Right for this Century

You have the right to your own mental order.  You need not be ashamed of anything you think or any way you think.

Performing, advocating or threatening harm to others are the only crimes.

Harm is deliberate inequality.

In the last few days I became strongly concerned about a political issue.  I cared so strongly about that issue that I contacted the leaders of Canada’s federal political parties, including the Canadian Prime Minister and my provincial political parties, including the Premier of my province.  I cared so much about this issue I revealed personal information regarding something that is not understood by society, those entrusted with its care or the leaders I contacted.

There is a large community that does understand what I revealed.  I spoke out to protect them.  I spoke out for a group that was executed by the Nazis to no one’s protest.  No movies are made about their disappearance.  They were among the first to die.

I want the rights of these people protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms–the Canadian Constitution.  Nothing less.

I don’t think there is a leader among us up to it.

We have to help ourselves.

I take comfort in the words of Aristotle: “Evil destroys even itself” and “All virtue is summed up in dealing justly.”

There are another two words I would like to introduce into the discussion: “democratization” and “personalization”.  We are encountering many new technologies and they are going through phases.  Most simply put they are going from specialist who is knowledgeable how to use the technology for the user, to technologist who uses the technology on behalf of a knowledgeable user, to personal where the generalist knowledgeable user interacts with the technology directly.

We are experiencing mass personalization of technology.  And this is leading to further phenomena.  Personal Cooperation and Personal Corporation.  People are as Howard Rheingold www.rheingold.com describes sharing more and more information freely.  But they are also discovering the worth of their reputation and knowledge and turning it into a business like Guy Kawasaki www.guykawasaki.com who is using ghost writers on twitter.

I foresee everyone  sharing their personal knowledge cooperatively and upon establishing worth selling the best of their personal knowledge corporately.

It is a beautiful future where everyone is personally incorporated and everyone personally outsources to everyone else globally.

Sharing information freely and openly is a dead end game, because we all have to make a living.

Sharing information on a globally set price scale and reputation system that recognizes the worth of the information and work every incorporated individual can provide is Open Capitalism (you heard it here first) and will free us from exploitation.

Let’s turn the race for the bottom back into a personal global race for the top.

This will be the true “Knowledge Economy”.
