Mental Order: A Right for this Century

charter-e

You have the right to your own mental order.  You need not be ashamed of anything you think or any way you think.

Performing, advocating or threatening harm to others are the only crimes.

Harm is deliberate inequality.

In the last few days I became strongly concerned about a political issue.  I cared so strongly about that issue that I contacted the leaders of Canada’s federal political parties, including the Canadian Prime Minister and my provincial political parties, including the Premier of my province.  I cared so much about this issue I revealed personal information regarding something that is not understood by society, those entrusted with its care or the leaders I contacted.

There is a large community that does understand what I revealed.  I spoke out to protect them.  I spoke out for a group that was executed by the Nazis to no one’s protest.  No movies are made about their disappearance.  They were among the first to die.

I want the rights of these people protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms–the Canadian Constitution.  Nothing less.

I don’t think there is a leader among us up to it.

We have to help ourselves.

I take comfort in the words of Aristotle: “Evil destroys even itself” and “All virtue is summed up in dealing justly.”

“He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother.”

– Roe Fulkerson

“And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother’s keeper?”

Genesis 4

I am a secular atheist, however I have read the Old and New Testaments completely.

Genesis 4

1And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.

2And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

3And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.

4And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:

5But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

6And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?

7If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

8And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

9And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother’s keeper?

10And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground.

11And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand;

12When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.

13And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear.

14Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.

15And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.

16And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

17And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.

18And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech.

19And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.

20And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle.

21And his brother’s name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.

22And Zillah, she also bare Tubalcain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubalcain was Naamah.

23And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.

24If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.

25And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.

26And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.

In 1924, the first editor of Kiwanis Magazine, Roe Fulkerson, published a column carrying the title “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother”. Dated September 1924, the article speaks of Fulkerson’s inspiring encounter with “a spindly and physically weak lad” carrying a baby and “staggering towards a neighboring park”.

” ‘Pretty big load for such a small kid’ I said as I met him. ‘Why, mister,’ he smiled, ‘He ain’t heavy; he’s my brother.’ “

Rufus Wainwright – He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother Lyrics

The road is long
With many a winding turn
That leads us to who knows where
Who knows when
But I’m strong
Strong enough to carry him
He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother.

So on we go
His welfare is of my concern
No burden is he to bear
We’ll get there
For I know
He would not encumber me

If I’m laden at all
I’m laden with sadness
That everyone’s heart
Isn’t filled with the gladness
Of love for one another.

It’s a long, long road
From which there is no return
While we’re on the way to there
Why not share
And the load
Doesn’t weigh me down at all
He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother.

He’s my brother
He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother.

I had a very good discussion with a friend on Facebook.  He told me that the American objection to socialism and a social safety net was the term “Nanny State”.  My response to him–and it came immediately–was, “The correct term is ‘My Brother’s Keeper State'”.

Suddenly, it became obvious to me that by refusing to adopt socialism as national policy USAmericans were as a country bearing “the mark of Cain” in the global community and among other first world nations.

Republicans hate maternalistic government.  Democrats hate paternalistic government.  It is time for fraternalistic government.

I urge all USAmericans to adopt socialist policies as their brother’s and sister’s keepers.

Adopt universal healthcare, universal education and universal employment insurance.

No American is too heavy for another American.

No one on Earth is too heavy for anyone else on Earth.

Buckminster Fuller: The Billionaires of Spaceship Earth

“Technologically we now have [six billion billionaires] on Spaceship Earth who are entirely unaware of their good fortune.  Unbeknownst to [us our] legacy is being held in probate by general ignorance, fear, selfishness, and a myriad of paralyzing professional, licensing,  zoning, building laws and the like, as bureaucratically maintained by the incumbent power structures.”

— R. Buckminster Fuller, Critical Path

I never regarded R. Buckminster Fuller as a true revolutionary until I began reading his final book, Critical Path.  The above quote from the preface clearly summarizes his position:  The people in power are artificially maintaining the poverty of the world.

May this generation pull them and their political structures down.

Mental Order for a change

winston_churchill

If you read the indepth biographies of Winston Churchill, you will discover that the man suffered from a mental illness called Bipolar Disorder.  Yet despit a life of political defeats, he was able to win the Prime Ministership and successfully lead Britain in its time of greatest need against the Nazi war machine with the words, “Never, Never, Never Give Up.”  Churchill’s strategic insight during the Battle of Britain and his compelling speeches are still studied by leaders around the world today.

abraham-lincoln-picture

Abraham Lincoln’s indepth biographies also reveal he suffered from a mental illness believed to be Bipolar Disorder.  Yet despite repeated failures won the Presidency and even after the death of his wife, led the United States through the greatest national crisis it ever faced, The American Civil War.  His memorial in Washington D.C. reveal a man of profound depth of thought and compassion for his countrymen.  He is regarded as one of the greatest Presidents the United States has produced.

Differing orders of the brain are often hard to distinguish.  Especially when studying accounts of historical figures.  Often different brain order societies claim that the same historical figures had their particular brain order.  An interesting truth is we all exhibit traits of every brain order.  We just exhibit them to varying degrees.

My theory is that all mental orders are just that different orders.  Some orders are more detrimental to one’s functioning than others.

I suggest we are all wired in a similar fashion, but we don’t understand the wiring yet or the inputs and outputs.  We don’t understand the range of Mental Orders humanity has.  Some orders are just more common than others.  Maybe in the end Synesthesia will be found to simply be a different mental order.  Time will tell.

Maybe, and more to the point I am saying we are confusing mental difference with illness.  Bipolar Order, Schizo Order, Borderline Order, Autistic Order and so on .

What I am really wondering is what Bipolar Disorder,  Schizophrenia and Autism are.

What is Bipolar Order?

bipolar

Bipolar Order is understood to be a chemical imbalance in the brain.  However, every cell in the brain is composed of chemicals and scientists do not fully understand brain chemistry and do not fully understand why the range of medications for Bipolar Order are able to conteract the symptoms.   Bipolar Order is a change in the affective aspect of the self.

Autism is not a lack of interaction with the world.  It is a different way of perceiving and interacting with the world.  Understanding autism is not a failure of the autistic, it is a failure of society to provide them with the tools to interact with us and apply their potential.

Psychism : Mental Discrimination

However, that is not what this post is about.  This post is about the stigma ignorance, prejudice and discrimination against the mentally different as well as the abuse of healthy people who choose to challenge authority or deviate from convention.  I couldn’t find a term like sexism, racism or homophobia, so I decided to coin a new term, “psychism”.  This is not the usage of psychism in its conventional sense, however I think the usage I propose is much more important to society.  Other schools of thought use “mentalism” or “sanism”, but I think psychism has more punch.  Psychism is mental discrimination and Psychophobia is fear of mental difference.

“You’re Crazy!”

When a person presents an idea the hearer has many options.

  1. You can attack the motive.
  2. You can attack the person.
  3. You can attack the timing.
  4. You can attack the location.
  5. You can attack the function.
  6. You can attack the data.
  7. You can attack the need.
  8. You can attack the provision.

Or you can attack all of them by questioning a person’s sanity.  This is Psychism.

To label a person as mentally ill when they challenge authority, act in a deviant manner or simply attempt to be creative is a psychist act.  It is an attempt to destroy a person’s credibility and self-esteem.  It is a violation of trust and a violation of human rights.  It does not matter whether that person is mentally ill or not.  Psychism is a crime.  It is a crime in religion, politics, the workplace, academically, in family and against oneself.  The only time when it is acceptable to intervene in a person’s actions is when they are a physical danger to themselves or others.  And in the case of Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia this is rarely the case contrary to public and media sensationalism.

It is often forgotten that the mentally different were among the first victims of eugenics, Nazism and fascism.  Is there going to be a place for them in the Canadian Museum for Human Rights?

Mental Difference and the World

It is predicted that Mental Health will be the dominant concern world wide this century.  It will affect us or someone close to us if not now in the near future.

Here’s some interesting statistics regarding a country struggling to get its Mental Healthcare System into place in the face of modern societal stresses:

  • I have been reading statistics on China.
  • There are only 17,000 psychiatrists for 1.3 billion people.
  • Suicide is the leading cause of death for Chinese between 15 and 34.
  • Chinese culture does not know how to deal with mental health issues due to stigma.
  • China has developed its own diagnostic manual that deviates from international standards to address “pragmatic” requirements, but also challenges the tendency in the west to pathologize everything.
  • China refuses entry to anyone with a mental disease, I think more due to incapacity of the health care system than anything else.

Australia will not grant immigration to anyone with a mental illness on the basis that they will burden the healthcare system.

Singapore built a new Mental Healthcare Hospital in the early 1990s to prepare to deal with this emerging issue.  However job security is still an issue if you fall ill.

I am still researching.

I hope that this century will be the century when psychism will become extinct in society.  When we learn compassion and help Synesthetes manage their health and recognize deviation by any person as a creative force.  Let’s forget Mentally Ill.  Let’s use the term Mentally Different.

Politics: A New Age In America

obamathenewhope

I would like to congratulate the American people on electing Barack Obama to the office of President of the United States.  President Elect Obama has proven to be a great election leader, but we must now prepare for him to be tested both domestically and internationally by friend and foe.  Let America and the free world stand behind him.

I would also like to congratulate John McCain on his statesmanship in conceding defeat.  He is and will continue to be a great leader for the American people.

Jared Diamond: Societal Collapse

If you listen carefully to what Jared Diamond is saying in the TED video above, he is describing not a five part, but a six part power curve into a systemic singularity. This has been one of the core themes of discussion of this blog.  We all seem to be too close to our problems to see the commonality.  The interrogatives come into play here:

  1. Goals
  2. People
  3. Functions
  4. Forms
  5. Times
  6. Distances

Times and Distances being the basis on which the higher orders are built.

When we look at the recent economic “crisis” we see 300 trillion in currency circulating and roughly 1 trillion to 2 trillion shifting suddenly and unexpectedly.  We witnessed a systemic collapse, a singularity, a tipping point, a power curve, an exponential change, a phase transition or whatever label you want to call it.  These have been happening everywhere since Time and Distance began in different contexts and orders both in human and non-human systems.

What Jared Diamond and other alarmists are implying is that human society is now a system approaching its final singularity in this century on this planet.  We are implying that today we are experiencing a less than one percent crisis on a power curve into a singularity.  How many more iterations will the global system withstand?  Will humanity make the step into space successfully before we experience a global dark age?  How will the six or more factors in the power curve play out?

The truth to me appears to be that power curves whether they play out or not result in either a systemic climax or anti-climax followed by a systemic collapse.  Would it not be better if we experienced a systemic climax that led to us expanding into the solar system?

Systemic collapse seems to be the fashion of this generation.  Every generation looks with fascination at its own youth, maturition, reproduction and acceleration into mortality.  Some die early, some die late, but all die.  It is an irrevocable law of nature.  It is not about self-interest.  It is about what self-interest is defined as.

Space: Canada Put Them on the Moon, Too

It is a paradoxical but profoundly true and important principle of life that the most likely way to reach a goal is to be aiming not at that goal itself but at some more ambitious goal beyond it.
Arnold Toynbee

During my daily surfing experience I encountered some of the conspiracy theories revolving around the Apollo Project claiming that the whole project was a hoax. After going over several of these arguments it occurred to me that the core issue is not how we put a man on the moon, but why.

The purpose of the Apollo Project was to give the United States military supremacy in space. Kennedy and his advisors both scientific and military knew that this required only orbital supremacy, however to make this supremacy stick technologically they had to shoot higher. They had to get the next leg up on the Soviets–that meant the moon.

The race for the moon was participated in by both sides of the Cold War conflict. The United States suffered many setbacks in the public eye, especially the loss of the astronauts of Apollo 1. However, the losses faced by the Soviets was much greater with the explosion of an entire rocket on the pad that set them back so far as to put them out of the race.

Apollo Project conspiracy theories are an insult not only to the United States, but to Canada as well. The greatest minds in Canada at the time were recruited to work beside America’s best to engineer the accomplishment of this mammoth task. If you are calling Americans liars about Apollo, you are also calling Canada’s brightest and best liars. And if you think Canada a pushover, you should read the history of the battle between American President, John F. Kennedy, and Canada’s Prime Minister, John Diefenbaker, over Canada’s refusal to this day to put nuclear weapons on its soil.

Yes, we did put men on the moon. It was done for very pragmatic technological reasons, not simply as a propaganda stunt. It was a crucial step in winning the Cold War.

Satire: It’s Not Easy Being Free

Below is my award winning Toastmasters speech on leadership and the constitution. – relationary

toad.jpg

The Tale of Free Toad

I am going to tell you a story. It’s a story about why you joined this organization.

Perfect Parties

Once upon a time there was a toad called Free Toad who when he was old enough left his home and set out to see the world. He lived and worked with all kinds of toads in all kinds of ponds.

One day he came to a pond called Muddy Waters much and he was invited to a toad meeting. There he met Control Toad.

Control Toad had been sitting on the same toad stool for twelve years.

At the meeting Control Toad was being honored and he gave an acceptance speech. “I give perfect toad parties.” Control Toad croaked, “The sun and the moon, the planets and the stars revolve around me and if anyone thinks different they can leave Muddy Waters.”

Free Toad was not impressed. He decided go to the ribbit hole to consult with an old friend, Wise Toad.

Free Toad asked Wise Toad, “Is being a toad about perfect parties?”

Wise Toad

Wise Toad looked long and deep at Free Toad and asked, “What was the goal of the first Toadmaster?”

Free Toad thought and could not come up with an answer.

Wise Toad replied, “To conquer fear.”

Free Toad asked, “Fear of what?”

Wise Toad replied, “Leadership, communication and achievement.”

Wise Toad continued, “Toads are afraid of their rights and responsibilities, afraid of speaking their mind and afraid to set goals and take action.”

Free Toad asked, “How do I know my rights and responsibilities?”

Wise Toad pulled out a strip of bark, “The Toadmaster Constitution”.

Free Toad asked, “How do I speak my mind?”

Wise Toad pulled out another strip of bark, “Ribbit’s Rules of Order.”

Free Toad asked, “How do I set goals and take action?”

Wise Toad pulled out a final piece of bark, “The Toadmaster Catalog.”

Wise Toad continued, “Toads have to return to the basics. The Constitution is the cornerstone of being a Toadmaster.”

Free Toad took the three pieces of bark and Wise Toad cautioned him, “Control Toad is a tyrant. He is afraid of the Constitution. When you use it he will try to kill you.”

Not At This Club

Free Toad hopped back across Muddy Waters and attended the next toad meeting. He ran for president and won. Control Toad was not pleased.

Free Toad announced, “I am giving every toad a constitution.”

Control Toad took Free Toad aside and said, “Stick the constitution, the rules of order and the catalog in a stump and forget them.”

At the next meeting Free Toad said to Control Toad, “The constitution says the president presides over all club meetings and business meetings.”

Control Toad replied angrily, “Not at this club!” and Control Toad took control of the meetings.

At the first executive meeting Free Toad said, “I would like each officer to perform their duties as defined in the constitution.”

Control Toad replied, “Not in this club!” And Control Toad took control of the duties.

Then one of Control Toad’s cronies wanted a favor. Control Toad said to the executive, “Do this favor without telling the club. It involves money and the club cannot be trusted.”

Free Toad could take it no longer. Control Toad had disempowered the President, disempowered the Executive and the disempowered the entire Membership.

Free Toad roared, “The Constitution says the executive can take no action without ratification by the club.”

Some toads covered their ears, some toads covered their eyes and some toads covered their mouths.

Control Toad covered all three.

Kangaroo Court

The next meeting Control Toad conspired with her clique of cronies and stormed the meeting.

“The word of the day is ‘occupation’,” declared Control Toad and her cronies surrounded Free Toad.

“I didn’t come here to achieve,” said one crony.

“I didn’t come here to communicate,” said a second crony.

“I didn’t come here to lead,” said a third crony.

Then Control Toad stood up last and croaked, “Free Toad has salamandered me”.

“Free Toad must be taught a lesson,” the cronies all croaked in unison.

The votes were tallied and Control Toad’s clique won five to four the rest abstained. They had persuaded no one but themselves.

Then Control Toad pulled out a cake and yelled, “On with my perfect parties.”

Next meeting they installed a president who proudly declared he had never read the Toadmaster Constitution or Ribbit’s Rules of Order or the Toadmaster Catalog.

Conclusion

Free Toad had learned a lesson: The constitution cannot defend itself. Every toad has to learn and uphold the Toadmaster Constitution if they are to fend off tyrants.

As Free Toad walked away from Muddy Waters he decided to start a new pond. A few young toads came to him and asked, “How do we join you?”

Free Toad asked, “What was the goal of the first Toadmaster?”
