Zen: Don’t Think Good or Evil

You become a person of good and evil.

I recently chanced upon a book sale and was able to purchase a book of Zen koans and a book of Haiku poetry for a fair price.  I had read about Zen in the past, but I had not read actual works by Zen masters.

I have completed reading Zen Inspirations: Essential Meditations and Text, by Dr. Miram Levering for the first time.  It includes the complete text of The Gateless Gate a thirteenth century collection of koans, commentary and poetry by Ekai, known as Mumon.  The book also includes The Ten Ox-herding Pictures accompanied by ten poems by the twelfth century Chinese monk K’uo-an Shih-yuan It is definitely not something you read only once.  I enjoyed the Zen masters’ admonitions to read the koan and permit yourself to solve it quickly and without hesitation to discover the enlightenment that comes from honesty.  As I read the koans, I let myself be honest about my inner response and the wisdom of the Zen masters became increasingly amusing.  I think I came to be enlightened many times by their frank honesty about the human condition, the Buddha and the Tao.  I think one admonition by Zen master Mumon, that if you encounter someone filled with the Tao, strike him in the face with all the strength you have, sums up what I have learned.

The Zen koans and Taoism I find agree with the philosophy of science, the philosophy of Karl Popper, skepticism, the evolutionary biology of Charles Darwin, the physics of Werner Heisenberg and the mathematics of Kurt Goedel seamlessly.  Uncertainty remains the only certainty.

There is origin without origin, direction without direction, destination without destination.  Any sense of order is localized and transient.  That is the Tao Te and not the Tao Te, and that is what the adherents to Zen struggle with daily.

I don’t claim understanding or overstanding of this paradox.

In examining an Newton’s and Einstein’s equations an interesting result became apparent to me.  According to Einstein’s equation

E = mc^2

If we consider my four dimensional equations in my previous related post

E = Mass * Light = M * C

or

E = ( ( T * T”’ ) / ( S’ * S” ) ) * ( ( S * S”’ ) / ( T’ * T” ) )

The next question we are faced with in physics is: now that we have Space and Time defined, what are Mass and Light?  In classical physics Mass and Light are the inverse of one another with Mass defined as

Mass = ( ( e * e”’) / ( p’ * p” ) )

and Light defined as

Light = ( ( p * p”’ ) / ( e’ * e” ) ).

However, I am taking the four dimensional Space and Time approach.  According to my earlier post my hypothesis of four dimensional Space is defined as:

Space = ( ( p * p”’ ) / ( p’ * p” ) )

and four dimensional Time is defined as

Time = ( ( e * e”’ ) / ( e’ * e” ) )

where p are point sets and e are event sets.  In the context of business Mass is Product and Light is Conduct (Service).  Consequently, Productivity is defined as

( T / S’ )

and Conductivity as

( S / T’ ) .

Where S and T are Space sets and Time sets respectively.

Productivity increase is defined as

( T / ( S’ * S”) )

and Conductivity increase is defined as

( S / ( T’ * T” ) ) .

FInally, we get Product (Mass) defined as

( ( T * T”’ ) / ( S’ * S” ) )

and Conduct (Light) defined as

( ( S * S’ ) / ( T’ * T” ) ) .

Thus, we have the second order of business.

One of the discoveries I have made, so far, in my study of physics and how it translates to business is that the fundamental building blocks of of the universe are the point and event.

The first step is to create the cardinal Distance set

Distance = | p |

and to create the cardinal Duration set

Duration = | e |

The second step is to create the ordinal Area set

Area = ( p / p’ )

and to create the ordinal Frequency set

Frequency = ( e / e’ )

The third step is to create the exponential Volume set

Volume = ( p / ( p’ * p”)

and the exponential Amplitude set

Amplitude = ( e / ( e’ * e” ) )

Finally, we consider the complete sets of Events giving us Space

Space = ( ( p * p”’ ) / ( p’ * p” ) )

and Time

Time = ( ( e * e”’ ) / ( e’  * e” ) )

where e are event sets and p are point sets.  Space and Time are four dimensional set constructs.

This applies to Business in the sense that Locating (Space) and Timing (Time) are the fundamental building blocks of business:  The first order of business.  We will move up to the next level in the next post.

They Failed, But They Were Not Afraid

When we think of physicists, the majority of us think of them as geniuses who understand the universe.  But the truth is, they do not.  Physicists, make models to explain and predict phenomena.  They are called “hypotheses”.  If a hypothesis stands up after many experiments it is called a “theory”, but it just a model.

Einstein was not a success.  He had some victories along the way, but he never achieved his goal.  Neither have the quantum physicists over the last eighty years.  They have corroborated many hypothesis that led to their ideas being called theories, but their theories are not proven.  That is because they do not predict all of the phenomena that are observed.  There are exceptions that cannot be explained.  From the first living thing that reacted to reality organisms have been trying to model their universe.  And every model is incomplete up to the physicists we have today.

Religion has become the word for the denial that a theory is incomplete.  Every religion on earth is guilty of it.  Scientists are guilty of it as well.  I am right every time I say that a model is wrong.  Goedel would agree with me.  The only constant appears to be that no theory is constant.  In fact, science requires us to speak in absolutes to leave room for falsifiability.  We have to leave no room for exceptions in order to discover the exception and change our worldview.

That is what a singularity is all about.  We refine our theory until it is cornered and then it realizes its transition into a new reality.  If we succeed in cornering out theory there is a climax.  If we fail in cornering our theory, there is an anti-climax.

Hiroshima was the singularity of the Second World War.  Nagasaki was the follow through to the exhaustion of Imperial Japan.

But Einstein’s life as a whole ended with an anti-climax as have the lives of every physicist who followed him.

Death is the ultimate anti-climax.  But do not be afraid.  No success nor failure is the complete measure of a person.  Accepting, changing strategy and trying again fearlessly is.

Physics: Within and Without the Box

I have been reading extensively about the thought experiment, called Schrödinger’s Cat, and have reached a personal conclusion that it is inherently flawed by its idealism.  There is no case where any object inside “the box” can be fully shielded from decoherence.  There is no example of this in nature.  Every case for the validity of the experiment is baseless.  Interestingly enough, this is what Schrödinger was out to demonstrate and with which Einstein agreed.  What hadn’t been explored at the time was entanglement can be explained simply by additional dimensions.
