Mood Disorders: Solution States

solution-states-450

In my philanthropic work with persons with mood disorders I have come to see a structure to mood.  Mood is affected by how we react to the stress of a problem and this puts us into a solution state.  People have a range of mood states that extend from the suicidal (nullity), stable (singularity) and psychotic (plurality).  Stress pushes us either upward or downward from a singular state.  This is not a linear transition, but an exponential Lorentz transformation that ultimately forms a bell curve (if you give this diagram another half).  Consequently, you have unipolar and bipolar individuals who experience a wider range of moods than the majority.

I have been doing considerable research and experiment regarding psychiatric classifications over the past three years.  In particular, bipolar affective disorder an unipolar affective disorder and have reached the following conclusions:

  • psychiatric states are dependent upon how an individual reacts to stress when encountering a problem
  • a non-polar individual encounters multiple solutions (stable), which I call singularity
  • a unipolar individual encounters zero solutions (suicide), which I call nullity, or one solution (stable), which I call singularity
  • a bipolar individual encounters either zero solutions (suicide), which I call nullity, one solution (stable), which I call a singularity, or infinite solutions (mania), which I call a plurality

Both unipolar and bipolar individuals enter nullity states, singularity states  and plurality states due to avoidance of a Maslovian need, a complex.

Neither medication, hospitalization, incarceration nor electrocution (ECT) are the solutions to a complex.

Solving a complex and consequently the nullity, singularity or plurality requires concerted peer support, exercise, nutrition and sleep at state onset until the complex is confronted by the individual and resolved.  Upon resolution, a normal emotional range is restored.

If you read the work of Jill Bolte Taylor, Ph.D. you will discover the “spirituality” you seek, the “good” you seek, is in the right hemisphere of your brain. The left hemisphere of your brain is discrete processing. The right hemisphere of your brain is concrete processing.

In fact, in my work with people with mental health problems (the word “issues” is bullshit) I find that unipolar (depression) and bipolar (manic-depressive) people appear to be either severely left brain dominant in the case of unipolarity or alternating between left and right brain dominance in the case of bipolarity. There is no physical or chemical evidence of any difference between a “stable” person, a unipolar person and a bipolar person. Stress simply pushes mental dominance to the right or left hemisphere.

Ethics: The Food of Reason and The Shit of Religion

aristotle

I am currently reading Ethics by the Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle.  Reading it has lead me to one conclusion: Judaic, Christian, Islamic, Buddhist, Zen and Hindu religious texts are so bogged down in metaphorical interpretation they defeat the purpose for which they are created.

Aristotle’s writing is clear, unambiguous and the terminology is well defined.  He clearly states that mature adults benefit more from the study of ethics than those in their adolescence or post adolescence simply because life experience is necessary to provide the foundation for its appreciation.

Aristotle is lucid.  I read his work in a few hours.  I did not need to read any of the commentary provided by the translators or editors.  In fact, I found the commentary a useless distraction.  If a translation requires commentary, the translation has not acheived it’s goal, the translators have been dogmatic.

Aristotle’s greatest achievement is declaring that no one is chosen by anyone.  Existence chooses us and from that point we choose to be who and what we are.

We choose our rights and responsibilities in our social and environmental context.  And in that choice lies goodness and happiness.

“Do to others as you would have others do to you” is not a call for love or hate, but a call for moderation in all things.

Moderation is not a call for mediocrity, but excellence and perfection.  To achieve the state where nothing need be added and nothing need be taken away.

This is one thing: Reciprocitism.

newInfinity

The origin of the word “recipe”.

A balance between self-acceptance and self-rejection.  Induction and Deduction.

I highly recommend reading Ethics over any religious text.  The food of Reason prevails over the shit of Religion.

Metta Chant: The Dissemination and the New Semination

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Beautiful Buddhist chanting on metta – loving kindness with English subtitles, but without disturbing English speech.  One of the most beautiful “prayers” among all religions.

However, this is only half a Mantra.  This mantra describes what it doesn’t want instead of what it does want.  This is a giant spiritual shit, a defecation, a bath.  For all the beauty of the music, this is a mantra of universal waste management.  This is necessary particularly when you are angry.

There should be a second part, a filling of words should be what we want for the world.  The writer of this mantra is afraid of what he wants. Mental health, Love, Safety, Physical Comfort, Caring for Others.  And so I offer part two, The Semination of Metta.  The spiritual feast.  This is necessary when you are emotionally empty or exhausted.  It’s also fun when you are happy.

Bureaucracy: Legalism versus Integrity

canadapassport

I discovered a great deal about identity today.

I went to the passport office to renew my Canadian passport.

I was treated very politely and given the necessary form.

I filled it out accurately and completely. Went to the passport officer and presented form, new photos and current passport. She opens the passport and looks at the photo page and says, “This passport is invalid.”

I reply, “I worked in the United States for one year using that passport, the TN1 visa is still inside.”

She says, “You didn’t sign the passport. It’s invalid.”

I think to myself, “I could take the passport outside, sign it and come back in.  In fact, I could take the passport and sign it right in front of her.  There was never a requirement for a witness; it could have been signed by anyone. This policy is retarded.”

She asks me for additional identification. I don’t have a driver’s license because I sold my car and decided I would use public transit. I offer my Social Insurance Card, but the signature has been rubbed off. I offer my birth certificate, but it has no signature. I offer my provincial health card, but it has no signature. I offer my credit card, my debit card and my library card.  I consider my Movie Village card because the signature is laminated.

She takes everything to her manager. She comes back and gives me a slip of paper. “This is the address of the Manitoba Liquor Control Commission. They are on the far side of the city. Have them provide you with a photo ID with your signature and fax me a copy.”

I tell her, “I don’t drink.”

She replies, “You don’t have to.”

I jump on a bus and I go across town. I give the MLCC all the same ID that I gave the passport officer. They have me sign a form and in five minutes I have a photo ID with my signature.  Because the signature pad is electronic and does not provide visual feedback as I am writing I find the first name and last name of my signature overlap.  Maybe it is designed to emulate your signature when you are blind drunk.  I’m over 40 and for the first time I have a card that explicitly states I can legally drink alcohol.

I travel all the way back across town to the passport office. I explain that the passport officer required me to provide another piece of identification. I am directed to a special officer. She makes a photocopy of the MLCC photo ID with signature and says, “Thank you, that’s it.”

Can you explain to me what was achieved by my going to the MLCC which cost me an additional $25 when you include bus fare, which couldn’t have been achieved by me simply signing my passport?

I protected one bureaucrat’s legalism by exploiting another bureaucrat’s legalism.  And the bureaucracy doubled its money.

I will have a renewed passport in two weeks.

They call themselves “public servants”, so why is the public required to jump through mindless hoops to make them appear vigilant?

We do these unnecessary and costly things bureaucrats tell us because we are not willing to sacrifice the greater cost of preserving our integrity and the integrity of policy.

Consequently, the bureaucrat keeps her job, politicians maintain the illusion of governance and we all lose.  Time, money, value.

Will my passport protect me and the global community?  Yes.

Did I also perform a mindless ritual?  Yes.

I believe that a healthy society is regulated by public servants.  However mindless observance of regulations by public servants fails both the public and the policy makers.

Anyone who tells you to violate your integrity to preserve theirs has none.  All they are doing is seeking a bigger piece of the pie at your expense.  It’s a measure of bargaining not morality.

Six Hats, Six Coats and Happiness

happyhouris9to5cover.jpg

I’ve had the chance to come across and am currently reading Alexander Kjerulf’s book Happy Hour is 9 to 5. It is a silly title but the book presents sound principles.  Something that has occurred to me in the course of reading it is the more control you have over the Six Hats and Six Coats you wear in your job, the happier you are. What I mean by this is the more control you have over how you repeat, refine, record, report, relate and revise your own outlook regarding your own motive, locale, object, method, person and moment, the more ready and willing you will be to get up on Monday morning.

Happiness at work, not just “satisfaction”, first comes with the choice to take control of yourself, your system, your own Six Hats and Six Coats and deciding to be happy. It also comes with management’s willingness to permit you to understand and influence all of the Six Hats and Six Coats of your company’s system. Read Alexander’s book, think about the Six Hats, Six Coats Framework and think about yourself, your company and your happiness.
