Synesthetes: Synesthetic Metaphor

There is a very interesting presentation on TED.com by a neurologist who has come up with innovative ways of treating his patients. In the third part of his presentation he talks of Synesthesia which is the ability to experience multiple sensory perceptions in place of one. For example tasting sound or seeing touch.

He points out that there is a part of the brain that, when damaged, disables the ability to understand metaphor and disables Synesthesia. He also demonstrates that we are all synesthetes with a simple experiment.

Understanding icons, in the context of this research, is a synesthetic experience and may show that contrary to my initial reservations, there is some truth to inherent meaning in icons that may be universal.

The moment you say “blue is cool” or “red is hot” you are expressing Synesthetic metaphor.

Anyone who can make metaphor is expressing their own Synesthesia. I personally think this is an area of research that should be explored to help people develop their own Synesthetic abilities. It should also be explored to help us find commonalities in Synesthetic perception to develop Icons and Icon languages.

Richard Cytowic has written a book called, The Man Who Tasted Shapes.

I don’t agree with his separation of Synesthesia from common Synesthetic experience, but his insights are worth reading.

Databases: Hyperbolic Schema Example

In a TED.com talk, Margaret Wertheim proudly relates how a craft predominantly practiced by women solved the physical representation of Hyperbolic Geometry.  Click on the image to view a video of the talk.

This got me to thinking about the representation of Hyperbolic Schemas and Hyperbolic Data.

An example of a Hyperbolic Schema is as follows:

Take the name “John”.  “John” can be seen as an word element or as a composite of “J”, “o”, “h”, “n”.

The left side of the brain sees the element, the right brain sees the composite. This applies level after level.  Phrase element and composite of words.  Sentence element and composite of phrases.  Paragraph element and composite of sentences and so on.  The associative database can support both representations.  This give you very powerful editing capabilities at many levels of granularity as well as powerful searches and applications.

Our product does this using the Sentences Associational Database from Lazy Software.  A relational database cannot do this effectively or efficiently.

  7. GREY: SELF: CORPUS CALLOSUM: The arched bridge of nervous tissue that connects the two cerebral hemispheres, allowing communication between the right and left sides of the brain.

Michael’s explanation of his illness, “My brain works differently than yours”, to his seven year old daughter lays the groundwork for every parent suffering from neurological and psychiatric illnesses.

“Tao can Tao not Tao”

I have been looking at the Platonic Solids and thinking about how they correlate to the five senses. I thought about the left and right hemispheres of the brain and realized that each of the Platonic Solids should be truncated to represent the right hemisphere. Now I had ten solids to work with. I worked backward from this and recognized I had to create a separate left right pairing of each of the senses to represent the brain correctly five on the left and five on the right. I have to create pairs of senses, trios of senses, quartets of senses and a quintet of senses. This is because these are ways we learn. We learn most when our senses are learning as a quintet.  This is why complete immersion in the environment we are to learn about is so effective.

This is a major revision of all my previous work.  However, I feel it provides a much more robust sensory model.

Isaac Newton’s legendary statement was the premise of my new design.  I saw there were five Platonic Solids and as a reaction they would produce the five Truncated Platonic Solids.  This would influence all the components of the Solids.

Imadeons.  They are imadical solids.  These are a cound of the number of faces on the Regular Solids.

If you have seen ZenUniverse 1.o and liked it.  You will be pleased to know that I have made some major enhancements to this concept.  We will still have the Six Solids, but we will expand considerably on the classifications.

In this version I will incorporate my work describing the six areas of human endeavor:
