The Reason Project will soon be a 501(c)(3) charitable foundation devoted to spreading scientific knowledge and secular values in society. The Reason Project will draw on the talents of prominent and creative thinkers in a wide range of disciplines — science, law, literature, entertainment, information technology, etc. — to encourage critical thinking and wise public policy. It will convene conferences, produce films, sponsor scientific research and opinion polls, award grants to other non-profit organizations, and offer material support to religious dissidents and public intellectuals — all with the purpose of eroding the influence of dogmatism, superstition, and bigotry in our world. The Reason Project was founded by Sam Harris and Annaka Harris.

I’m puzzled. Why start a new organization when there are so many existing groups, local and national, that could become bigger and stronger with the support of prominent authors and speakers such as Sam Harris? I participate in several groups in San Diego who all have the same problem. We stay small because we can’t attract the kind of speakers that build membership and attract resources. We would love to have a permanent freethought center, with a meeting room and library, but we just don’t have the resources. If we want to educate and inform the public we need to build up the local groups all around the country. We need a stable, consistent presence in every city, with permanent offices where interested parties can speak to a real person and find information.

    Long live rational thinking!
    Onwards and Upwards.
