One of the most common questions raised between developers and DBAs is what type of naming convention to use. Often the only thing advocated is “be consistent”. However, there is a standards body that has taken the time to lay out what we should be consistent with.
The International Standards Organization and the International Electrotechical Committee have joined up and are continually refining metadata standards. The site is known as the SC32 WG2 Metadata Standards Page. Of paticular interest is the 11179 Metadata Registry standards and more specifically the 11179-5 Naming Conventions.
If you want to adopt a naming convention you can take with you to any workplace, I would have to say this is the one.
